Passive Monitoring
What is Passive Monitoring?
Passive monitoring is a type of monitoring for networks or systems that collects and analyzes data without injecting test requests or probes into the network. Passive monitoring systems analyze the existing traffic and flow of data within the network or system. This allows organizations to gain insight into the performance, security and behavior without interacting directly with the infrastructure.
Passive monitoring is valuable for understanding the operation of a network or system. Unlike Active Monitoring, which periodically tests a resource, passive monitoring continuously observes them. By capturing real-time data, it is capable of providing a holistic view of the behavior of a network, over time.
Passive monitoring is reactive, it derives insights from the observed existing traffic and data flows. It is valuable for understanding ongoing operations of a system or network, identifying issues, and maintaining security.
